Zack Hines-Rager had jumped from the train trestle into the Chehalis River before. But when he tried again two weeks ago, the teenager from Centralia, Washington, didn’t realize how cold the water would be at this time of year. It cost him his life.
A week later, three people had to be rescued from a rock in Northern California’s Trinity River, which was also flowing higher and colder than usual.
Down in Auburn State Recreation Area where drownings regularly occur in the American River at this time of year Auburn Sector Superintendent Mike Howard is doing what he can to educate the public about river hazards in early spring. Howard has personally pulled drowning victims from the river, and he’s hoping that awareness campaigns about the impact of snowmelt on rivers can help
