Chester Creek Music In The Park Releases Line Up
The City of Duluth Parks and Recreation has released the lineup for the 2021 season for music in the park at the Chester Bowl Park.
There are some surprise names on the list, like Mary Bue, but it also includes Breanne Marie and the Front Porch Sinners, who put out the best local music cd recently and will feature some of that music. Mary Bue also released an album recently and was recognized with awards this past year.
The concerts take place every Tuesday night at 7 PM with the first night starting June 15. Then in August, it switches to a 6:30 PM start time. Feel free to bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on. Plan on sitting with a little room in front of the stage for dancing. Families are encouraged to attend, with swings, and other playground equipment to enjoy. Parking does get a little tough but if you are patient you will find one.
Hovland, a 1952 Olympian, was an icon in the Duluth cross-country skiing scene.

Several days a week this past winter, Duluth’s George Hovland would get in his car and drive to Spirit Mountain to downhill ski for a few hours. He was 94.
Nobody who knows Hovland would be surprised by this. For the kid who grew up within walking distance of Chester Bowl, downhill skiing, ski-jumping and cross-country skiing, moving about on skis seemed as natural to him as walking.

Thursday is traditionally Souptown night for the Duluth Homegrown Music Festival, with most shows happening in Superior and a pre-game soup potluck with music, dubbed #SoupB4Sup at 2104. In a way, this year’s Thursday activities were more like a normal Homegrown than previous nights, with a small gathering of soup-eaters and livestreams at 2104 plus live, in person shows across the bridge at Earth Rider.
The live shows started earliest, with the Misisipi Mike Allstars kicking off night two of what Earth Rider is dubbing “Starfire’s Unofficial Birthday Bash” during Homegrown week. The crowd trickled in as the evening went on, with some light sprinkles that did nothing to chase away the good vibes.

Friday of Homegrown Week saw another night of live performances at Earth Rider Brewery festival grounds for their Starfire Unofficial Birthday Bash, and it was Duluth Homegrown Music Festival founder Scott “Starfire” Lunt’s actual birthday, which made everything even more festive. If it seemed as if more people than usual were clad in flannel, blame item #31 from the Unofficial Homegrown Scavenger Hunt task list, “Flannel Day!” The hunt continues through Sunday at 4pm.
The food truck of the day, Oasis del Norte, was on hand and the sun was shining as Kyle Ollah started the evening off with his rootsy folk trio, featuring Clancy Ward on fiddle and Jen Krussow on upright bass. Meanwhile, inside the Cedar Lounge, Ingeborg van Aggasiz was performing for her regular Friday residency, sharing a mix of originals and covers of tunes including Bob Dylan’s “Abandoned Love” and The Replacements’ “Swingin’ Party.”

Collecting trash is a collective effort, and this year, participation for Keep Duluth Clean was up 30% from last year.
“We currently have about 500 people signed up,” Alaina Lawrence, events co-coordinator said.
The event goes on all weekend, so people still have time to particpate. Those who would like to sign up can do so here.
“It really takes everyone doing these big projects like this,” Lawrence said.
On Saturday, families, friends and neighbors cleaned up bottles, wrappers and more.
“We organized a little neighborhood get together,” Bobby Hahn of Duluth said. “And came up with this truck load of trash.”
