“To Create is in Our Nature” is the latest workshop being offered by Rockford’s Severson Dells Nature Center.

Ann Wasser is the director of the center. She said the organization will focus on writing poetry inspired by nature, with the help of local poet Christopher D. Sims.
“And it was something I think that was a little unique to bring to the audience here at Severson,” she said. “And hopefully encourage other people that maybe are followers of Christopher and his work to think about incorporating nature into some of their own creativity.”

If you’ve been outside or just looked out your window, you may have seen a frosty or icy display of winter weather. Depending on where you live, that s hoar frost or rime ice. They look a lot alike. The major difference is how they re formed.
Jessie Crow Mermel is an educator and naturalist with Severson Dells Nature Center. She said when conditions are cold, clear and calm,
hoar frost forms like dew. And it s when the water vapor which is in the gas form turns into the solid state, which is ice crystals directly landing on objects that are below freezing, Mermel said. The water in this process never actually goes through the liquid form.

Spokesperson Ann Wasser also the director of Severson Dells Nature Center said they are offering a bingo-based challenge throughout all of January and February and it s called the 815 Outside Winter Challenge.
The premise is to explore nature in new ways and they ve designed a bingo card to help you track your activities. The card isn t filled with rows of numbers. Each square contains a winter activity like cook a meal over a fire or find a natural icicle.
Every time you complete an activity, simply mark off the square. You don t necessarily have to yell Bingo! every time you fill up a row or a whole card but you can enter yourself in a drawing for a gift card from local stores.
