Yarm School student shortlisted for prestigious art award

Mia Mack with her painting AN art student has been shortlisted in to one of the countries most prestigious art awards. Talented artist and Yarm School Lower Sixth Form student Mia Mack, 17, has been shortlisted for one of the prestigious Holt Festival Art prizes. Miss Mack, who is studying A Level Art, submitted her oil painting ‘New Shoes’ for the Sworders Art prize for young talent aged 16 – 18. Shortlisted works for the two Sworders Art prizes are also entered in the Sir John Hurt Art Prize. Miss Mack explained the concept behind her entry: “Inspired during lockdown by how much music can change how you feel, I created this piece to capture my usual reaction to hearing the song ‘New Shoes’ by Paolo Nutini – dancing.

Three haircuts help to raise £4,100 for family friend s cancer treatment

Three brave volunteers have had their long locks chopped in a bid to raise vital funds to pay for cancer treatment for a family friend. Fifteen-year-old Amy Groves and her younger sister Evie, who is 10, together with Amy’s godmother Fay Matthews-Jones faced the scissors on Tuesday evening to boost the fundraising campaign of Warrington Guardian columnist Mel O’Neill, who has been battling cancer for the past 10 years and needs £1,200 for each dose of her medication. Not only will the trio’s efforts help Mel pay for her essential treatment every three weeks but their hair will be donated to Little Princess Trust, to make real hair wigs and hair pieces for children and young people who have lost their own due to cancer.
