In the salt water marshes of southern California, a splashing killifish is easy prey for a hungry shorebird. Like a jerking marionette, the helpless creature shimmies and flashes on the surface of the water. And all the while, hiding deep in its brain, an invisible other quietly pulls the strings.
The puppeteer in question is the super-abundant parasitic flatworm known as
Euhaplorchis californiensis. Throughout its life, this one parasite will infect no less than three animals, and a bird s intestine is the final destination it wants to reach.

Wood had been searching for detailed historical datasets for over 10 years, and Kuris’ was only the second one she’d found. There simply weren’t many folks working decades ago who took thorough records of data like the number of parasites in each host and the body size of each host two pieces of information crucial for comparing historical and contemporary ecosystems, she explained.
“It’s almost impossible to get any time depth on trajectories of parasite change for this reason,” Wood said. “We have no idea how parasites have been changing for the past couple of decades. We’re just flying blind.”

In the pretty terrifying footage, a crocodile can be seen being stalked by a tiger shark in the shallow waters off the coast of Australia.
The clip, which was filmed on a drone, shows the shark trailing the croc for around two minutes.

Clearly not the croc s first rodeo, it can feel something on its tail, so makes a move for the rocks further ahead, escaping the shark s jaws.
