Vans, one of the world’s most recognized California and skate-lifestyle brands, passed away on May 6 at home, surrounded by family.
Van Doren founded the
Van Doren Rubber Company with his brother, Jim, and their partners, Gordon Lee and Serge Delia, in Anaheim, Calif., in 1966. Vans issued the following statement:

Brothers Paul Van Doren and Jim Van Doren along with partners Gordon Lee and Serge Delia opened a small manufacturing storefront on March 16, 1966, located at 704 E. Broadway in Anaheim. On that first morning, 12 customers purchase shoes, which are made that day and ready for pick-up in the afternoon, according to the company s website.

Paul was not just an entrepreneur; he was an innovator, said VF Corp. in a statement. Paul s bold experiments in product design, distribution, and marketing, along with his knack for numbers and efficiency turned a family shoe business into a globally recognized brand.
Van Doren and his brother Jim Van Doren (who died in 2011) along with partners Gordon Lee and Serge Delia established the Van Doren Rubber Company in 1966, which later became known as House of Vans. The brand officially rebranded as Vans Inc. in 1991 and was sold to V Corp. in 2004.

Paul Van Doren, cofounder of Vans, a shoe brand that became a multi-billion-dollar action-sports empire thanks to the SoCal skate community and a focus on custom kicks, died Thursday at 90.
His death, confirmed Friday by Costa Mesa, Calif.-based Vans, comes just nine days after the publication of Van Doren’s book, “Authentic: A Memoir by the Founder of Vans.” No cause of death was given, but, according to Vans, Doren died at home surrounded by his family.
