Crowe II/Times Union TROY – After losing by only one vote in the Democratic primary for the City Council’s Sixth District, Working Families Party candidate Marketa Edwards relaunched her campaign Monday outside Griswold Heights. Edwards will be in a three-way race for the Sixth District, which covers much of South Troy.  Edwards faces Democratic candidate Cheryl Kennedy and Republican Irene Sorriento.   The three are running to succeed Democratic Councilwoman Eileen McDermott who opted not to seek re-election to a second, two-year term.  The electoral contests in the district are often very tight.

Capital Region voters approve school budgets, boards and propositions

CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. — On Tuesday, May 18, school districts across the Capital Region held votes on budgets and school board elections. According to the New York State School Boards Association, New York voters approved 99.2% of school district budgets. We appreciate the many who turned out – in person or by absentee ballot – to approve local school budget proposals and elect school board members this year, NYSSBA Executive Director Robert Schneider stated. The high passage rate for proposed budgets is a welcome endorsement of spending plans that will strengthen our educational programs and restore some of the academic and student support services that were curtailed by the pandemic, Schneider continued.

The art of basket weaving is undergoing a boom

Normal text size Very large text size Iam sitting in a church hall with 15 women and one teenage boy and we are chanting “over, under, over, under, over, under” while facilitating good conversations between bits of Bangalow palm. This is odd. But this is also soothing, hypnotic even. We are basket weaving. Our instructor, Sydney fibre artist Catriona Pollard, has demonstrated “random weaving” using Bangalow palm inflorescence – the dried stalks and stems of the palm’s flower head. The technique is like a good conversation, she says, “two people take turns talking and listening”. Each piece must play an equal part: we take a tendril from one and weave it diagonally into the other, over, under, over, under, over, under, then we take a tendril from the other and weave it back into the first. Neither piece dominates the conversation.
