Comal County s COVID vaccine standby list dwindling; health officials reaching out to avoid wasting doses

Comal County staffers are still signing up those requesting COVID-19 vaccines — the problem is, there are now more vaccines than requests, and officials are working to make sure no doses go unused. For the second straight week Cheryl Fraser, county public health director, reported vaccinations of several who hadn’t signed up for inoculations — all in an effort not to waste vaccines. “We’re not turning any one away, but we’re not really advertising that,” she said. “We’re trying to get past these second-dose clinics; we might have to take a different approach to how we’re doing it.”

Nursing students helping power Comal County s health department past 26,000 COVID-19 vaccinations

As COVID-19 active cases remain steady, Comal County commissioners enthusiastically approved agreements with San Antonio nursing schools whose students have played a critical role in county COVID-19 vaccinations. “We couldn’t have done it without them,” said Cheryl Fraser, public health director, prior to county agreements formalizing relationships with Alamo Colleges’ St. Phillip’s College and Galen Health Institutes Inc., parent of Galen College of Nursing. “With these mass clinics we’re doing we need approximately 50 to 60 students to administer up to 2,000 vaccines a day,” Fraser said. “We’ve talked to several local colleges for students to do their clinical hours at the site (New Braunfels Civic/Convention Center).”

New Braunfels man in his 60s added to Comal s COVID-19 death toll

The man died at a New Braunfels hospital on March 28, officials said. The number of active COVID-19 cases in the county moved slightly higher with 22 new cases and 11 recoveries. Of the new cases, nine are confirmed and 13 are probable. The county now has 195 active cases, with eight of those cases hospitalized. Comal County hospitals reported caring for 19 COVID-19 patients on Monday — up from the 13 reported on Friday. Five of those patients are in intensive care and three are on ventilators. Local hospitals are caring for a mix of local and remote patients and some county patients may be hospitalized elsewhere.

Comal County health department transferring vaccine to area providers

Comal County’s public health department is doing its part to spread the COVID-19 vaccine around to areas that may be having difficulty getting it.  On Friday, officials said the department has transferred more than 2,000 doses to different providers across the county. “In an effort to help our neighbors, Public Health has transferred small quantities of vaccines to local pandemic vaccine providers,” said Comal County Public Health Director Cheryl Fraser. “We want to make sure that all vaccine gets into arms as soon as possible and that everyone who wants a vaccine has a chance to receive one.” Officials said the department transferred vaccines to providers in Spring Branch, Bulverde, Canyon Lake and Schertz.
