With Lula Back, the Political Fight in Brazil is Between Democracy and Authoritarianism

March 15, 2021 Justice Edson Fachin’s ruling on March 8 to reverse three sentences against former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva upended Brazilian politics. The Supreme Court (STF) decision overturned charges that stemmed from the Operation Car Wash ( Operação Lava Jato) in 2018, condemning Lula to more than 12 year in prison and suspending his political rights. Lula was imprisoned in April 2018 at the Federal Police headquarters in Curitiba, where the Lava Jato, now in the process of being shut down, was based. He was released in November 2019 after serving 580 days, when the Supreme Court finally agreed to examine his case and reinstated the jurisprudence that no one can serve a sentence before it can be reviewed by the country’s highest court.

What next in Brazil after Lula s corruption convictions annulled? | Politics News

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Last week, in a surprise ruling, a Brazilian Supreme Court judge quashed all corruption convictions against former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, restoring his political rights and opening the door to a possible 2022 presidential run. Lula, the 75-year-old leftist leader from the Workers’ Party (PT), has not yet confirmed whether he intends to run next year, but he and his defence team view the judge’s ruling as a testament to his innocence. In an address to the nation on Wednesday, Lula described the sprawling anti-corruption scheme in which he was convicted as “the biggest judicial lie told in 500 years of Brazilian history”.
