Lula Corruption Charges Dismissed; Could Run Again in Brazil

A Supreme Court judge in Brazil on Monday dismissed the corruption cases against former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, restoring his rights to run again for office in 2022. Lula spent 18 months in jail and was freed in 2019 after being convicted in a huge corruption scandal linking him to politicians and business leaders. The case was dubbed Operation Car Wash. BBC reported that the Supreme Court ruling restores Lula s political rights unless his convictions are reinstated.  According to Justice Edson Fachin, a court in the southern city of Curitiba lacked the authority to try Lula on corruption charges. Fachin added that the former president of Brazil must be retried in federal courts in the capital Brasilia.

Retrial of Lula da Silva makes him a formidable rival for Bolsonaro s reelection; financial markets rattled

Financial analysts said the prospect of a Lula candidacy would likely drive Bolsonaro to further embrace populist measures to shore up support. (Rahel Patrasso/Reuters) The decision to annul former president Lula da Silva s conviction had an immediate effect in financial markets and scrambled forecasts for the 2022 Brazilian presidential race, with many investors betting it would polarize voters between right-wing populist president Jair Bolsonaro, and Lula, a left-wing populist but also his greatest opponent. In a surprise decision, Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin said a court in the southern city of Curitiba had lacked the authority to try Lula on corruption charges and that he must be retried in federal courts in the capital Brasilia.
