Going to see the giant trolls? Here s what else there is to do around Boothbay

Ben McCanna/Staff Photographer Something is always happening around Boothbay Harbor, what with a lively restaurant and bar scene, family attractions and scenic wonders. But this there’s even a bigger reason than usually to visit the area – giant in fact. An exhibit of giant wooden trolls built among the trees at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay called “Guardians of the Seeds” will open to the public Saturday. It features five wooden trolls built by artist Thomas Dambo, from Denmark, and scattered around the gardens’ 323 acres. Some are in plain sight while others are deeper in the woods. They range from 15 to 30 feet high. Their mission is to protect the seeds of the forest and teach people about sustainability.

Maine Woodland Owners announces restart of in person programs

Read Article AUGUSTA In response to recent Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidance, Governor Mills has lifted all capacity limits and requirements to physically distance in public outdoor settings in Maine as of May 24. As a result, Maine Woodland Owners will offer a full slate of in person field programs this summer and fall. The organization conducts more than 50 woodland owner education programs a year, and in the past 12 months, nearly all were held online. People throughout the state will have multiple opportunities to gather in the woods for hands-on experiences hearing from experts and landowners about forest management options and ways to enjoy their forested acres.

Ben McCanna/Staff Photographer By the time you read this, I will have installed two packages of replacement bees into hive boxes sitting on a hill in Wiscasset overlooking the Sheepscot River. None of the colonies that my beekeeping buddies, Ann and Mark Light, and I set up last year survived the winter. We didn’t send bee remains off to a lab, but we know our girls most likely succumbed to a virus they picked up after being infested with varroa mites.
