Galesburg Police responded to the intersection of North Seminary and East Fremont Streets on Thursday, April 29th after a school crossing guard and a 13-year old female student were struck by a vehicle. Galesburg Fire and GHAS were already on scene when GPD arrived yesterday around 3:00pm. Both the student and the 69-year old male crossing guard were on the ground complaining of pain. The 77-year old male driver told police he was approaching the intersection southbound on Seminary Street when his foot slipped off the brake pedal and the next thing he remembers was hearing a “thud”, according to police reports. Witnesses told police the crossing guard and student were standing on the northwest corner of the intersection and began crossing while inside the crosswalk when the pedestrian crossing signal was on, and the crossing guard was holding up his handheld stop sign.
