Alber Elbaz, who has died of Covid-19 aged 59, was the affable creative director of Lanvin from 2001 to 2015, transforming one of the oldest fashion houses in France into one of the 21st century’s most exciting luxury labels, defined by classic cuts and lush fabrics, offset by striking costume jewellery – and a romantic, off-kilter aesthetic.
Elbaz created the gold dress worn by Meryl Streep when she accepted her Oscar for Best Actress in 2012 for The Iron Lady, while Kate Moss wore an Elbaz dress on her first night out after giving birth to her daughter, Lila Grace, and Tilda Swinton wore an Elbaz black bias-cut skirt and fawn chiffon blouse at the 2009 Oscars ceremony.

A hefty part of the Portion of Emor pertains to the Jewish holidays. Each holiday is surveyed along with its particular precepts. The discussion of the holidays begins with a preamble – [Vayikra 23:2] “Speak to the Israelite people and say to them: These are holidays… which you shall proclaim as sacred occasions” – and ends with a summary – [Vayikra 23:44] “So Moshe declared to the Israelites the holidays of G-d”. While other commandments are preceded by a preamble, precious few of them conclude with the words, “Moshe did what he was supposed to do[1]”. Why would anyone suspect that Moshe decided, for some reason known only to him,
Anyone interested in Ottoman architecture needs to add Edirne to their Turkey itinerary.
Once the Roman city of Adrianople, Edirne became capital of the Ottoman Empire in 1363, and it was from here that Mehmet the Conqueror launched his victorious military campaign to capture Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul). Even after Constantinople stole Edirne s crown, successive sultans continued anointing the city with grand architectural works.
The main tourist attraction people come to see is the
Selimiye Mosque, agreed by most historians to represent the epitome of Ottoman architectural design. There is plenty more finery to explore and things to do beyond this major landmark, though.

Street names, especially ones in common use, often tell an interesting tale. Such is the case with Middle Road. Constructed late in the first decade that followed British Singapore’s 1819 founding by Sir Stamford Raffles, parts of Middle Road have become known by a mix of names in the various vernaculars. Each provide a glimpse into the streets fascinating past, the communities it played host to and the trades and institutions that marked it. It is its official name, Middle Road, that seems to have less to reveal and what Middle Road the middle, is a question that has not been quite as adequately answered.
The Examined Life
Learning how to live also necessitates, from time to time, spiritually pondering the brevity of time at our disposal.
