Following a series of CBS News reports that revealed potential safety dangers in vehicle seats, Senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal will reintroduce legislation that would require a new strength standard. Seatback strength standards have not been substantially updated since 1967, allowing thousands to be injured and killed when their car s front seats collapse after a crash, Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, told CBS News. That s why I m reintroducing legislation to require the modernization of our seatback safety standards moving forward. We must end these entirely unacceptable and preventable tragedies.

Two Senate Democrats are urging federal regulators to take “corrective actions” against Tesla to prevent further misuse of the company’s advanced driver assist feature. The request comes in the aftermath of a fatal crash in which two men from Texas were killed after their Tesla Model S crashed with no one in the driver’s seat.
In a letter sent to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Acting Administrator Steven Cliff, Senators Ed Markey (D-MA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) implored the agency to determine the exact cause of this recent crash to “better inform” future legislation around advanced driver assist systems like Tesla’s Autopilot.

A group of American lawmakers has put forward a draft legislation that seeks to prevent Saudi Arabia from acquiring nuclear weapons amid reports about suspected attempts by the kingdom to process uranium and move toward the development of atomic bombs.

Nearly 100 worldwide experts and advocates are urging Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to ditch plans to create an Instagram for kids, claiming such a platform will exploit kids overall well-being.
A coalition led by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and groups including the Commercial Center for Humane Technology, Common Sense Media and the Center for Digital Democracy along with dozens of researchers sent a letter Thursday to Zuckerberg expressing their concerns.
The group says that a version of Instagram – the photo- and video-sharing app with more than 1 billion users – for kids under 13 preys on their fear of missing out as their ravenous desire for approval by peers exploits their developmental growth. The experts also worry that automated decision-making could affect what kids see.
