Opposition Responds to Senator Courtenay on T.N.C.
During Monday’s Senate Budget Debate, Senator Eamon Courtenay raised the issue of the U.D.P. administration’s waiving taxes on land purchased by the Nature Conservancy for a period of fifty years. According to Courtenay, this would have yielded over three hundred million dollars in revenue to the government of Belize. He referred to the arrangement as a ‘secret agreement’ and a ‘nefarious deal.’ Today, those who were at the helm of the former administration had their say when the Opposition held a press conference in Belize City. Former Attorney General refuted Senator Courtenay’s claim that the agreement was done unlawfully because it was not brought before the National Assembly for approval.

Eamon Courtenay
Inside the Senate on Wednesday, Senator for Government Business Eamon Courtenay went into details about the land agreement between the Government of Belize and the Nature Conservancy. In his presentation, Senator Courtenay referred to the transaction as a “scandal” and estimated that inclusive of stamp duty write-offs, land tax write-offs, and speculation tax write offs, the former Minister of Land wrote off some six hundred million dollars in tax revenue payable to the government. And, according to Senator Courtenay, the former Minster of Lands executed the transaction only weeks before the 2021 general elections. These reports have of course raised eyebrows, considering the austere times Belizeans are facing. In response, Senator Peyrefitte asked for proof.

According to Senator Eamon Courtenay, who represents both the People’s United Party and Government Business, any programs created would be for limited duration, with permission of the Minister of finance. According to Courtenay, clause sixty-six is not designed to assist any particular business or entity. Like Prime Minister Briceño, Senator Courtenay stressed the purpose of the bill is to provide liquidity to the system, not to aid a failing financial company.

“What you have is money sitting in banks doing nothing; sitting in banks. Senator Smith said 420 in domestic banks, 247 million in credit unions. Madam President, tens of thousands of Belizeans are unemployed, thousands of businesses have failed, thousand more are on the edge and we say that we are currently facing an urgent unique, unusual and exigent financial circumstances and we have to have instruments designed by the Ce

Michael Peyrefitte
In response to Lead Opposition Senator Michael Peyrefitte, Senator for Government Business Eamon Courtenay pulled out black and white proof that shows that what was done today was a plan created by the Barrow Administration. The P.U.P. Government says that this process was in motion before the November eleventh elections. Today, Senator Courtenay whipped out WhatsApp messages dated last year between a C.E.O., a former U.D.P. minister, and the interested investor discussing the New York Convention’s ratification.
Michael Peyrefitte, Lead Opposition Senator
“There is this talk that the U.D.P. did two things, that the U.D.P. start this process before November eleventh. You see even in the P.U.P. press release yesterday. That is absolutely and utterly false. There were initial negotiations. We did commit to talk about it at some point in the future. But what was the problem Madam President we could not be convinced as to what w
