(Joe Gromelski/Stars and Stripes) WASHINGTON â The Department of Veterans Affairs promised a new approach Wednesday for the major project to overhaul its electronic health record system, following concerns from federal watchdogs and employees who used the program when it first when live in Spokane, Wash. VA Secretary Denis McDonough testified Wednesday before the Senate Veteransâ Affairs Committee about the challenges and the departmentâs plan moving forward. Shortly after becoming secretary in February, McDonough paused the project and ordered a 12-week internal review. The review revealed patient safety problems, escalating costs, a lack of productivity and ineffective training on the new system for health care providers, among other issues.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough on Wednesday acknowledged fundamental flaws in the agency’s troubled $16 billion effort to modernize veterans’ medical records, a project championed by former president Donald Trump and his son-in-law that is beset by cost overruns, delays, misrepresentations to Congress and a disastrous rollout at its first hospital. McDonough told Senate lawmakers that a three-month internal review of the electronic health records system found so many structural problems that he cannot continue to deploy it at other hospitals until VA leaders are confident of success. He could not say when the rollout will resume.
