(The Center Square) – Opposition is growing against a bill that could disrupt in-person instruction at public and private schools during any type of future emergency.
House Bill 2789 could potentially encourage complaints against schools for arbitrary infractions of health rules, provides possible penalties against schools, and allow the state to become involved in the operations of private schools, opponents said.
The bill’s sponsor, Christopher Belt, D-Swansea, said the legislation was designed to get all Illinois school districts on the same page during an emergency.
“It’s about safety,” Belt said. “It is about keeping parents safe, it is about keeping faculty safe, it is about keeping kids safe.”

Illinois lawmakers, State Police advocate for FOID modernization proposal
Unmute
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State lawmakers could debate a new proposal this month that would “modernize” FOID cards. In fact, Illinois State Police hope they can create an electronic card. Their bill could also consolidate the FOID and concealed carry license into the same item.
Sponsors want to keep guns out of the hands of people who are a clear and present danger to others. But, they also want to address that without causing more headaches for responsible gun owners.
“I tell people that other than unemployment issues, FOID issues are the biggest calls I get in my office,” said Sen. Dave Koehler (D-Peoria). “The director has really done, I think, a magnificent job to get the backlog down.”

SPRINGFIELD –Wednesday morning, State Senator Dave Koehler (D-Peoria) held a press conference alongside State Representative Jay Hoffman (D-Belleville) and Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly to discuss his legislation to modernize Firearms Owner Identification cards in Illinois.
“Our goal is to ensure that we are keeping firearms out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves and others,” Koehler said. “Our goal is not, however, to hassle safe, responsible gun owners. Through the modernization and streamlining of the FOID card process, I believe we can successfully accomplish both of our objectives.”
