National broadband policy being ‘finalised’ Senate panel informed 5G will be auctioned by 2023, small IT companies will be listed on the stock market ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology has been informed that the federal government is finalising the national broadband policy, 5G will be auctioned by 2023 and small IT companies will be listed on the stock market. “IT exports have crossed $2 billion for the first time and next year s target is $3.5 billion,” a meeting of the standing committee held under the chairmanship of Senator Kauda Babar at the Parliament House was informed on Thursday. Leader of the House Senator Shehzad Waseem, senators Rubina Khalid, Sana Jamali, Sami Azdi, Sania Nishtar, Palwasha Muhammad Zai Khan, Shahadat Awan and Afnanullah Khan besides IT ministry secretary, additional secretary, PTA chairman, Universal Service Fund chairman, representatives of cellular companies and other officials attended the meeting.

The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology met with Rubina Khalid in the chair, here on Monday. The Ministry of IT officials told the committee that they are providing facilities to IT professionals, and have started training programs for around 25,000 per annum. Further it is also training freelancers, out of 1.7 million freelancers, 500,000 freelancers are earning monthly. Further, third-party monitoring is also being carried as well as online monitoring. The issue of ban on social media was raised in detail in the committee meeting. Chairperson Committee Senator Rubina Khalid said that parents should be made aware – responsibility should be given to parents and families. It is not the job of the PTA to shut things down.

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications Tuesday expressed concerns over fake social media accounts operating with the names of political and social personalities. The meeting was chaired by Senator Rubina Khalid. While expressing her grave concerns over the misuse of social media in the country Rehman Malik said that thousands of fake social media accounts are running for different malicious purposes and spreading blasphemous and highly objectionable materials to create uncertainty and chaos among the public. He said that many are operating social media accounts with different names including the names of politicians are also used. He said that we had arranged hardware for Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) that such objectionable and hatred materials could be removed and the accounts could be blocked immediately however about the fate of hardware PTA can tell either it is operating or still under process.
