Penn State To Remove Terms ‘Sophomore’ And ‘Freshman’ From Course Descriptions
Penn State University is removing the terms freshman, sophomore, in an effort to rid course descriptions and materials of gendered terms.
Penn State s Faculty Senate voted on April 27 to approve bill AD84 on Preferred Name and Gender Identity Policy. The recommendations, which were given to the general Senate by the Senate Committee on Curricular Affairs, were made to ensure all materials given to staff and students are inclusive, according to the student paper The Daily Collegian.
The changes will replace all pronouns in course materials and descriptions with they/them/theirs and use non-gendered terms like student or staff instead. Freshman, sophomore, junior and senior will be replaced with first-year, second-year, third-year, and fourth-year students, to move away from a typically male-centered world and rid the college of materials with a strong, male-centric, binary character.

In this week’s edition of campus madness, we return to Penn State, where administrators are striking another blow against the patriarchy by banning more words. The vile, forbidden speech in question has nothing to do with slurs against women, however. There are going to be new designations for students entering each of the four standard years of college progression. Newly arriving students will no longer be referred to as “freshmen.” Gone also will be the terms junior and senior for third and fourth-year students. Why? Because those words are apparently non-inclusive and “paternalistic.” No, you really can’t make stuff like this up, folks. (Daily Wire)

Do you remember the excitement of college? Do you recall the energy of your freshman year? As a sophomore, perhaps, you were hitting your stride. As a senior, per chance, you were large and in charge.
Well, that was then and this is now. Perhaps you’re still large and in charge or like a lot of us maybe only one of those. Either way, a new generation won’t be stepping on the same ladder rungs your cool Reeboks or Chuck Taylors or Dr. Martens once did.
At least, that is, in terms of terms.
