Fans of a popular Hoboken pizzeria are begging its owner not to sell. (Caren Lissner)
HOBOKEN, NJ Among the more than 20 pizzerias in mile-square Hoboken, Mario s Pizza is a mainstay: For the free turkey dinners it gives to the needy on Thanksgiving; for the traditional pizzas with unusual toppings, for the kids shows and Yankee games often playing on its TVs, and, well, for the fact that it faithfully delivers sangria, a popular feature among pandemic-weary moms.
A brief announcement on owner Mario Albunia s personal Facebook page Friday, in which he said he wanted to sell the store for $4.25 million, brought wails of Nooooo in community Facebook groups.
HOBOKEN, NJ - It s a classic, alright.
Serving up slices, pies and garlic knots since 1985, Mario s Classic Pizza has been owned and operated by the Albunia Family since opening up shop on the corner of 8th & Garden. After 36 years among the upper crust of Hoboken pizzerias, Mario is talking about hanging up the bow tie and setting his sights on retirement.
At least that s what he said on social media Friday night, in a post that sent ripples across the Hoboken community. Albunia stated that his building at 742 Garden Street was for sale a deal that would include two apartments, the pizza shop (indoor and outdoor seating) and the liquor license. According to his own post, he s asking $4,250,000.
