Hunger strikes for climate change: Teacher holds sit-in to call for action

07/05/2021, 7:00 pm Flanked by placards, a retired teacher from Moray has begun a series of hunger strikes and sit-in protests to call for urgent action to protect the planet. John Lardner, from Forres, has become increasingly concerned about climate change over the last 40 years. While teaching in London and Kuwait he saw first-hand the rise of emissions and pollution in major cities. Hunger strikes replicate climate change action needed Now Mr Lardner has begun a series of 24-hour hunger strikes through May while calling for climate change action from the UK Government to be sped up. He said: “We’ve known about climate change since at least the 1980s and Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and other organisations have tried so many different types of demonstrations and actions while lobbying MPs.

Dorset Council accused of gagging open debate over Local Plan and climate

TWO Dorset councillors have accused the authority of gagging open debate. One has resigned a committee position claiming there is no point in being there if her voice is not being heard. Bridport councillor Dr Kelvin Clayton says that ‘angry’ is an understatement of how he feels after a climate change question for this week’s council meeting was ruled out of order. He and Lib Dem spokesperson for climate change, Cllr Marie Roe from Colehill and Wimborne East, had put forward a motion asking to support the Climate and Ecology Bill which is waiting for its second reading in Parliament.

LETTER: Big positives in district council budget | Somerset County Gazette

FOR many of us in the Taunton area, three positive things stood out from the news that our Liberal Democrat-led district council - SW&T - had passed the proposed budget for the current year. Not only had the council successfully balanced the books in very difficult times, but also there were no cuts to services. In addition, the pledge to support various sustainable and eco-friendly initiatives, in line with the local implementation of the Climate Neutrality and Climate Resilience Action Plan, is to be maintained. Very importantly, community action is at the heart of the plans for ecological regeneration and I’m delighted that, in line with this, the recent acquisition by SWT of the historic Fox’s Field at Tonedale is to give scope for a ‘green’ project led by the Wellington Transition Town voluntary group, who are about to canvass online the views of local people on how best to develop, care for and enjoy this much-loved public open space.
