Sulwe into an animated musical feature.
“The story of Sulwe is one that is very close to my heart. Growing up, I was uncomfortable in my dark skin. I rarely saw anyone who looked like me in the aspirational pages of books and magazines, or even on TV,” said Lupita Nyong’o in the announcement. “It was a long journey for me to arrive at self-love. Sulwe is a mirror for dark-skinned children to see themselves, a window for those who may not be familiar with colorism, to have understanding and empathy, and an invitation for all who feel different and unseen to recognize their innate beauty and value. I am thrilled that the book is being adapted into an animated musical that we hope inspires children all around the world to celebrate their uniqueness.”
Lupita Nyongo’s children’s book “Sulwe” will be adapted into an animated musical for Netflix. Written by Nyong’o and illustrated by Vashti Harrison, the book follows a young Kenyan girl named Sulwe, who wishes for her dark skin to be lighter. One night, Sulwe is visited by a shooting star sent by the Night that opens

The movie of
The Return of the King had so many endings, but here’s one more, and it’s worth it. Molly Knox Ostertag (
The Witch Boy,
Strong Female Protagonist) has illustrated the unpublished
Lord of the Rings epilogue in which Samwise Gamgee has a sweet conversation with his daughter. It’s a story about yearning and absence and love, and Ostertag’s beautiful art makes it all the more affecting.
You can see Ostertag’s full comic here, and read Tolkien’s original text here.

I recently read the unpublished epilogue to Lord of the Rings, a chapter framed as a conversation between Sam Gamgee and his daughter. It is really beautiful and bittersweet so I illustrated it! You can read it as a scroll here: https://t.co/wxiWXacLbR
