Non-resident fees increase at popular Idaho parks

Non-resident fees increase at popular Idaho parks MGN Online IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - Camping and entry fees for non-Idaho residents will double at select Idaho State Parks on Thursday to comply with a new state law. The daily, non-resident entry fee at Bear Lake, Farragut, Hells Gate, Priest Lake and Round Lake will be $14 starting on June 10, 2021 – twice the fee for Idaho residents at those parks. At other State Parks, Idaho residents and out-of-state guests will pay the same $7 fee to get in. Additionally, camping fees for non-Idaho residents at Farragut, Henrys Lake, Ponderosa, Priest Lake and Round Lake will be double what Idahoans pay. For example, a basic campsite at those parks will cost $48 for a night, while a site with full hookups will cost $64 for a non-Idaho resident – in both cases, double the $24 and $32, respectively, that Idahoans pay.

New Idaho Parks and Recreation Director Named

Brad Little s office announced recently Susan Buxton will head the outdoor and recreation department for the state that includes 30 state parks, registration program for boats and other off-highway vehicles, and grant programs. Buxton has been the interim director since September and served on the Parks and Recreation Board from 2012 to 2016. From 2016 she served as the administrator for the Idaho Division of Human Resources (DHR). “I am proud to give back to Idaho in my new role and will work hard alongside the outstanding team at the Department of Parks and Recreation to help improve Idahoans’ quality of life through the great work we do in supporting outdoor recreation and resource stewardship,” Buxton said in a prepared statement.

State park s First Day Hike program offers a virtual option

With a bit of a pandemic twist, Idaho Parks and Recreation is going virtual for its 2021 “First Day Hike Event.” Every Jan. 1, Parks and Recreation wants folks to get outside and hike, ski or snowshoe. Typically, to encourage participation, rangers-led hikes are offered across the state. State parks are given the option of going virtual or offering ranger-led outings. “Usually we’ll do several guided hikes in parks across the state, this year we’re going to try to do self-guided hikes not only at state parks but pretty much anywhere,” said Chelsea Chambers, Parks and Recreation information specialist. “If you want to go take a walk in your neighborhood, we’re counting it. We’re just encouraging people to get out. It’s so we don’t have big crowds of people gathering at some of our more popular parks.”

Idaho s First Day Hikes event goes virtual for 2021 | Features

BOISE — The nationwide Jan. 1 First Day Hike Event is being held virtually this year. Rather than ranger-led hikes across the state, Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) is encouraging everyone to participate in a self-guided hike and record their total miles walked. This year, the event will span across three days (Jan. 1-3). IDPR has created a digital landing page at https://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/virtual-first-day-hike/ where participants can easily record the number of miles they hiked, walked, or jogged. “With cooler weather, it’s easy to forego that daily walk or weekend hike,” said Brian Beckley, IDPR Board Chairman. “But it’s important to stay active and spend time outdoors. With extended days, this year’s virtual hike makes the event even more accessible for all: hike, walk, or jog anywhere, anytime.”
