CURT SYNNESS For the Independent Record HELENA — For this week s Sidelines, we highlight gymnastics coach Denny Allen, women s golfing record-holder Susan Court, and men s volleyball coach Travers Cox. Longtime Mount Helena Gymnastics and Gym406 gymnastics club owner and coaching legend Denny Allen has retired. Since he first started directing the sport 45 years ago, it has been estimated that he s guided some 5,000 gymnasts. Allen started his gymnastics career as a member of the Bitterroot Gymnastics Club in 1970. As a senior member of Missoula Sentinel s team, he reached the 1974 State finals on rings, pommel horse and parallel bars. In 1976, Allen captured the Washington Open championships on rings and pommel horse in the collegiate division.

Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch hosts Walk for Water fundraiser Community Submitted Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch members and supporters, including an 8-year-old and an octogenarian, are getting creative raising money to bring clean water and sanitation to a village in Peru. This year’s recipients for the annual Walk for Water event, which will be virtual this year, will be 3,600 people living in the community of Villa Talandracas, Peru. The cost to provide them with a sustainable water system is $150,000, and the money will come from local, Rotary District 6960 and Rotary International grant funding. The Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch currently serves as the host international club for eight similar projects in Peru.

Social engagement can significantly reduce rates of loneliness in older adults. Victoria Thatcher agrees. Thatcher, a retired editor and consultant, and husband Mayhew Seavey, an electrical engineer, are co-founders of Hager Homestead, a pioneering cohousing community to be built in historic Littleton. Thatcher got the idea when she lived in Denmark, where cohousing began. In January, Hager won approval from Littleton’s planning board to construct the first cohousing community for adults ages 55 and older in New England.

One Car Stolen, 12 Others Broken Into in Same Night in West Orange

The incidents occurred on the following streets: Mississippi Avenue, Susan Court, Robert Court, Wilfred Street, Smith Manor Blvd. and Valley Road. Police believe the vehicles were unlocked during these incidents. The suspects, who remain at large, were described by victims as two black males between the ages of 16 to 20. In a separate incident, on Sunday, Dec. 20, the owner of a 2020 Honda Accord Sport told police that four sets of tires and wheels valued at $3,000 were stolen from the car at the West Mill Apartments on Old Short Hills Road. Investigation revealed that someone removed all four tires, wheels and lug nuts and left the Accord sitting on plastic milk crates.
