(CNA photo) TAIPEI (Taiwan News) Wreckage from the F-5E fighter jet that crashed into the sea October last year was transported to Kaohsiung Harbor on Saturday (May 1) after having been retrieved the day before. The salvage ship Polaris arrived at the Port of Kaohsiung noon Saturday carrying the remnants of the aircraft, which will be handed over to the military. The Taitung District Prosecutors Office has dispatched military police and forensic personnel to the harbor to search for evidence. After the investigation, the wreckage will be returned to Taitung s Chihhang Air Base, where it was stationed.

Less than two minutes after the plane took off from Zhihang Air Force Base in the southeastern county, it disappeared off radar screens over the sea. The pilot, Chu Kuan-meng (朱冠甍), 29, escaped by ejecting from the aircraft, but nevertheless was still pronounced dead after having been taken to hospital with head injuries.

According to the base, the first two F-5Fs took off at approximately 8 a.m. and returned safely after 40-minute test flights. Wu Jung-hua (吳榮華), who heads the air base, said Tuesday s mission involved only twin-seat F-5Fs, while test flights for single-seat F-5Es are expected to be carried out soon.
