Yoav Perry is extremely enthusiastic about cheese. You’d have to be to do what he’s doing in Olde Kensington right now: In a reclaimed shipping container inside a raw production space on Hancock Street, Perry is busy separating curds from whey, ladling fresh cheese into molds, and flavoring drinkable yogurts and whey “tonics” with salted caramel and pistachio. With his forthcoming creamery, Perrystead Dairy, Perry will join a robust community of cheese people in Pennsylvania, eager to do justice to the commonwealth’s dairy history.

In making his cheeses, yogurts, and kefir, which will be available for purchase this spring, Perry will only work with local dairy farms in the surrounding counties, like Montgomery and West Chester. It wasn’t long ago that the wine selection in Philadelphia was uninspired at best and non-existent at worst. In a city full of notable chefs, craft beer, and outstanding places to eat, interesting wine has often been a state-hampered afterthought. But over the past few years, more exciting wine styles have begun to step into the spotlight in Philly, and finally, our city is having its much-deserved wine renaissance.
It all started around the summer of 2015 when rosé was rising in popularity.
Not only had rosé proven itself as a legitimate style of high-quality wine, but its beauty was also Instagram-worthy, and lots of millennials were turning 21. The seemingly sudden embrace by producers, sommeliers, and consumers of a style that had largely been viewed as less-than-serious was the first step away from more traditional, perfunctory wine lists. Skin contact wine, pèt-nat, and other varieties of natural wine followed rosé onto wine lists.

Nicholas Ducos and Francesca Galarus are the owners, building their first business while also planning their wedding.
They make five varieties of wine and source all of their grapes from small growers in a 300-mile radius.
They then help the farmers pick the grapes, hand crush them, hand bottle, hand cork and hand label. They opened as a retail-only operation but plan to add small group tours and tastings starting in March and eventually have an outdoor space where people can sit and enjoy the wine.
You can buy a membership, much like a farm CSA. Pre-pay and you get $2 a month and the couple is donating 15% of membership fees to neighborhood improvement projects.
