WILMINGTON For many years, as part of the Memorial Day program at Sugar Grove Cemetery, Wilmington Veterans Post 49, American Legion has had a wreath placed on the grave of a particular nurse by the Auxiliary Unit Presidents of the Legion and VFW Post 6710, or their representative.
This tradition was altered a bit last year and continued with the 2021 program, with plans to make it a permanent part of the event.
Poelcher named December Student of Month

GREENE TWP. – Victoria Poelcher, a senior at South Side High School, was selected as December Student of the Month by the South Side Education Association.
The daughter of Tracy Hopkins of Georgetown and George Poelcher of Hookstown, she has been involved in marching band, Pennsylvania Academy of Science Club, Quiz Bowl, Academic Games, National Honor Society and the Euro Challenge.
Poelcher was named to the Distinguished Honor Roll throughout high school and the homecoming queen. She won the outstanding chemistry award from Slippery Rock University and placed first and second in the PA Junior Academy of Science Competition at Slippery Rock and Penn State.
VFW Auxiliary honors those who display flag

VFW 6710 Auxiliary began its first round of patriotic recognitions on a day when the sun was high, offsetting the 30-degree weather.
We made many stops and had the opportunity to talk with homeowners who clearly have a sense of pride and connection to America. Some of them seemed pleasantly surprised to receive a certificate and a heartfelt “thank you” simply for flying the American flag high.
We encountered a couple of familiar faces, veterans and family alike, most who welcomed a brief visit, and others eager to share family history. I could envision sharing a cup of coffee with them and listening for hours to retold stories of bygone days.
