Since the regular season was extended by a week, the preseason was consequently shortened by a week. As a result, every team in the league will only play three preseason games with the exceptions being the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys, who are playing in the Hall of Fame game.
Over the course of the most recent NFL Draft cycle concluding on Saturday, many former Penn State football standouts found new homes at the next level. In total, six Nittany Lions heard their names called throughout the seven-round event, including two-first round selections for the first time since 2003 in Micah Parsons and Odafe Oweh.
For the first time in program history, three Penn Staters were picked in a row toward the latter half of the final round. Safety Lamont Wade was the only Nittany Lion in this year’s draft process to sign as an undrafted free agent.
Although each players’ days of donning the blue and white at the collegiate level are over, many draftees are set to make an immediate impact on Sundays. With offseason training quickly approaching, let’s take a look at the roles each Nittany Lion could play for their new NFL squads.

In 2016, the heralded four-star product arrived in Happy Valley as the second-highest rated commitment on the offensive line in Penn State’s storied history on the recruiting trail. After redshirting as a true freshman, the physical presence appeared in 12 games the following season, but never cracked the starting rotation.
As a redshirt-sophomore in 2018, Menet made 12 starts at center and anchored an offensive line that paved the way for Trace McSorley and Miles Sanders’ success on the ground. The bruiser’s progression continued by earning team captain status a year later, a campaign capped off by securing All-Big Ten Honorable Mention status by the coaches and media.
Former Penn State football star tight end Pat Freiermuth was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft on Friday night. He becomes the first tight end drafted from Penn State since Mike Gesicki was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2018.
