Melaka CM fondly recalls childhood memories under now-fallen tree

MELAKA: Like many other Melakans, Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali has many fond memories from his childhood involving a 157-year-old Yellow Flame tree that was uprooted following heavy rain here. The state Chief Minister said the tree held sentimental value for many locals, including him, who had gathered under its shade for more than one and a half centuries. During the exco meeting today, the uprooting incident was brought to our attention. All of us shared our past memories of taking shelter and frolicking under the tree during our teens, long before Melaka was a top tourist destination. Hearing that the tree was no longer there left us all sad, he said on Wednesday (March 17).

Melaka govt to ensure EIA done first on RM15bil Kuala Linggi port project

MELAKA: The state government will ensure that environmental impact assessment (EIA) studies will be carried out prior to the construction of the RM15bil Kuala Linggi International Port (KLIP), says Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali. EIA is a must for all reclamation projects in Melaka and we will not give the permission if one project doesn t comply with the EIA, the Melaka Chief Minister said in an interview here on Saturday (March 13). He added that the EIA report is crucial for both Negri Sembilan and Melaka. Sulaiman was asked to comment on the statement by Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar Aminuddin Harun on March 10 that Seremban will ensure the KLIP project wouldn t cause problems for the state in the future.

Melaka CM welcomes police crackdown on fake Justice of the Peace titles

He said those with fictitious titles should be flushed out before they deceive unsuspecting people. “My administration fully supports the crackdown by Melaka police against fake JPs. “I hope police would continue to arrest those with fake JP titles without compromise, even if the suspects drop names (of influential figures), ” he said when met on Thursday (March 11). Sulaiman said the use and sale of fake JP titles has sullied the image of the state government, which is now calling for stern police action against those involved in the deed. “JP is a prestigious title and is recognised by Commonwealth countries. We can’t afford to have the award misused, ” he said, referring to a report in The Star on Thursday about the arrest of a group of people with fake JP titles.

MELAKA: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali has pledged to get rid of the illegal orchards occupying 33.1ha of reserve land around the Durian Tunggal Dam in a bid to protect the state s primary water source. Sulaiman, who took a boat ride to assess encroachment by the unauthorised growers, found durian, dragonfruit and guava plantations well hidden from the eyes of enforcement agencies. “There were also buildings such as workers huts and chalets erected illegally at the sites, ” he said on Tuesday (March 9), adding that the act of trespassing on reserve land had been going on since 2014. He said 75% of the encroachment, involving an area of 188.73ha, had been resolved through notices from the Melaka Water Regulatory Body (BKSA) and Alor Gajah Land and Mines Office to the culprits.
