Assam elections: Security tightened as voting for 3rd phase of polls begins

The voting for the third and final phase of Assam Assembly elections began on Tuesday morning as huge security blanket spread in 12 districts while all Covid-19 protocols being maintained, officials said. The voters comprising men, women and the first time electorates, in large numbers queued up in front of the polling stations well before the voting for 40 of the total of 126 assembly seats opened at 7 a.m. The polling would continue till 6 p.m. without any break as the Election Commission has extended one hour time in view of the Covid-19 induced situations. Assam Chief Electoral Officer Nitin Khade said that all necessary steps have been taken to conduct free, fair, peaceful and smooth elections on Tuesday, when 79,19,641 voters including 39,07,963 women electorates are eligible to cast their votes across 9,587 polling stations in 6,107 locations.

The Mizoram government has provided relief for the time being to people crossing over into Indian territory following military coup in Myanmar and waiting for a direction from the Centre as regard to their future stay here, state Home minister Lalchamliana said on Monday He informed the state legislative assembly that some people from Myanmar have sneaked into Mizoram in the recent days due to the volatile political situation in the neighbouring country. A detailed record of the identities and other particulars of the Myanmar nationals, who have entered into Mizoram due to the humanitarian crisis, is being prepared and relief is provided to them by the state government for the time being.

Assam polls: Cong fields fresh faces, 15% women, 5% Muslims

Around half of the 40 candidates announced in the Congress first list for the Assam Assembly polls are fresh faces, while 15 per cent of them are women and five per cent Muslim nominees. The main opposition party late on Saturday night released the first list of 40 candidates for the 47 Assembly constituencies that are going to the polls in Assam in the first phase on March 27. According to the list, announced by Congress Central Election Committee in-charge and party General Secretary Mukul Wasnik, six women - Sibamoni Bora (Batadroba), Roselina Tirkey (Serupathar), Bismita Gogoi (Khumtai), Pallabi Gogoi (Teok), Angkita Dutta (Amguri) and Pranatee Phukan (Naharkatia) and two Muslim candidates - Mohammad Nurul Huda (Rupohihat) and Rakibul Hussain (Samaguri) - were given party tickets.

Mizoram accords highest priority to achieving self- sufficiency: Governor

Mizoram Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai on Tuesday said that the state government has accorded the highest priority to achieving self-sufficiency, especially in food grains. Addressing the assembly on the first day of the budget session, Pillai said that Mizoram has seen steady progress in the implementation of centrally sponsored schemes and the states flagship programme - Socio-Economic Development Policy (SEDP). He said that oil palm cultivation area has increased to 26,531 hectare, a rise of 2.34 per cent, by the end of 2020. The governor said that under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region, a Central Sector Scheme, Mizoram has covered 13,000 hectare of land involving 14,104 farmers.
