Release of Award-winning Documentary Feature Los Hermanos/The Brothers
NEW YORK – First Run Features has acquired the award-winning documentary feature
Los Hermanos / The Brothers and will release it in theaters nationwide (via a mix of in-person and virtual cinema runs) starting Friday, May 14 in dozens of cities including Chicago, Los Angeles (Laemmle Theaters), Miami, New York (at Symphony Space), Washington, DC, as well as Akron, Buffalo, Kansas City, Sarasota, Winston-Salem, and many others.
Directed by Marcia Jarmel and Ken Schneider, the film follows virtuoso Cuban-born brothers Ilmar the violinist, and Aldo the pianist who live on opposite sides of a geopolitical chasm a half century wide. Linked by music and dreams, their unfolding story offers a nuanced, often startling view of nations long estranged, and a vision of what can happen when borders can be crossed.

On April 20, more than 50 people picketed in front of KQED public television studios in San Francisco’s Financial District to protest the airing of Independent Lens’ “Philly DA” about the career of District Attorney Larry Krasner. Although he campaigned as a “progressive” who would rectify decades of white-supremacist rulings against Black defendants, Krasner has since refused to order a new trial for Mumia or open possibilities for overturning his conviction.

Late one night in an adult education classroom in Dorchester, Kafi Dixon compares the toll of living in an environment that upholds white supremacy to a “slow drip, drip, on a hard stone.” Her comment prompts a burst of discussion. One student ups the comparison to a trickle and the group shares a laugh when another adds, “Turn that faucet off!”
Drawn to the intimacy and transformative potential of the Clemente Course in the Humanities designed to give adults with limited financial resources a chance to rigorously study literature, history, and philosophy Newton filmmaker James Rutenbeck thought he’d make a documentary full of scenes just like the one described, inspired by students like Dixon. And in fact, he tried.
