Sumit Nagal loses in 1st round at ATP 250 event in Italy
CAGLIARI (Italy), Apr 6: India’s Sumit Nagal bowed out in the opening round of the ATP 250 Sardegna Open, losing a hard-fought three-set match to Slovakia’s Jozef Kovalik here on Tuesday.
Both world No. 136 Nagal and world No. 124 Kovalik came into main draw through qualifying rounds and the Slovak prevailed 3-6 6-1 6-3 in a contest that lasted for two hours and 13 minutes.
Nagal had earlier won both his qualifying round games in straight sets.
He won 6-2, 6-1 against Frenchman Maxime Janvier in the second round of qualifiers to make it to the main draw.

Apr 5 (IANS): India s tennis ace Sumit Nagal overcame the challenge of Italy s Andrea Pelegrino 6-3, 6-4 to enter the second and final qualifying round of the $408,800 ATP tennis tournament in Cagliari, Italy.
The No. 139-ranked Nagal, took one hour and twenty-eight minutes to get past his Italian rival, ranked No. 283 on the ATP, and set up a final-round clash on Monday against Maxime Janvier of France, who defeated Maxime Cressy of the US in straight sets.
The Cagliari tournament - also called ATP Cagliari - has a qualification phase where lower-ranked players have to compete to participate in the main tournament. A total of 40 players compete in the tournament of which 24 get direct entries into the main tournament, while the others take the qualification route.

(Reuters) â Francisco Cerundolo continued to fly the family flag high in his home country by reaching his maiden ATP Tour semi-final at the Argentina Open on Friday, a week after his teenaged brother Juan Manuel won the Cordoba Open title.
Qualifier Juan Manuel, 19, became the first player in 17 years to win an ATP title at the first attempt when he defeated Spainâs world number 47 Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the final of the claycourt tournament in Cordoba on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Francisco also came through tough qualifiers at Buenos Aires to reach only his second main draw and kept the hopes alive of a âCerundolo sweepâ in Argentina when he took down sixth seed Pablo Andujar 1-6 6-3 6-2 in the last eight.
