Historic budget accelerates investments in helping businesses, families and local governments rebound and grow

Historic budget accelerates investments in helping businesses, families and local governments rebound and grow As you are likely aware by now, the 2021-23 state biennial budget makes historic investments in Washington’s recovery and growth trajectory coming out of the pandemic. At Commerce, we are preparing for significant work ahead as we implement a $2.7 billion operating budget and $2.4 billion in capital funding. Our team is growing – we’re recruiting exceptional team members, so I invite you to check out and share positions currently posted and watch for more here as we enhance our capabilities, particularly around equity and inclusion, and economic development and community outreach. As always, Commerce will be well-equipped to tackle the big challenges ahead, and we’re excited to be tasked with so many important programs that will strengthen communities throughout the state over the next two years and beyond. Here are some highlights from the 2021 session and budget.

Why Hydrogen Might Still (Eventually) Make Sense

Why Hydrogen Might Still (Eventually) Make Sense Steven Cole Smith © MediaNews Group/Bay Area News via Getty Images Despite supply hiccups, and past promises that have never quite come to fruition, hydrogen-fuel technologies continue to improve, and the future still looks bright. Martin Tengler, Tokyo-based lead hydrogen analyst for BloombergNEF, likes to talk about how we’re on the cusp of at least the fourth pro-hydrogen near-frenzy since 1974. That’s the year Road & Track touted“Hydrogen: New & Clean Fuel for the Future” on its March cover. They probably didn’t mean more than 45 years in the future. The second frenzy came in 2005, when the CEO of Ballard Power Systems, maker of fuel cells, said they’d be selling between 200,000 and 500,000 a year to auto manufacturers by 2010. They did not hit that mark.

What is renewable diesel?

May 6, 2021 With the expansion of domestic canola crush capacity in Western Canada, the term “renewable diesel” is being mentioned much more frequently.  Many growers are familiar with biodiesel, but the two are different and not interchangeable. Although they can come from the same feedstocks, such as vegetable oil, the process of making them is different. Ian Thomson, president of Advanced Biofuels, defines the three types of fuel in the following ways: Biodiesel is the original. It’s made through a simple biochemical process (i.e, esterification) creating a fuel that can be ‘dropped in’ up to 20 per cent. Biodiesel is chemically different from diesel, and blended typically at lower blend levels in winter. Biodiesel is handled differently in cold weather but extensive cold-climate use in the U.S. in Minnesota and elsewhere shows it can be done.

Expert Commentary: Potential and Benefits of Blue Ammonia as a Clean Fuel of the Future

Expert Commentary: Potential and Benefits of Blue Ammonia as a Clean Fuel of the Future May 5, 2021 10:30:am Summary According to the latest edition of the GECF Global Gas Outlook 2050, the demand for natural gas is expected to increase by 50% from 3,950 billion cubic metres (bcm) in 2019 to 5,920 bcm by 2050. by: Dr Hussein Moghaddam, GECF Posted in: Expert Commentary: Potential and Benefits of Blue Ammonia as a Clean Fuel of the Future According to the latest edition of the GECF Global Gas Outlook 2050 [1], the demand for natural gas is expected to increase by 50% from 3,950 billion cubic metres (bcm) in 2019 to 5,920 bcm by 2050. Therefore, natural gas would be an integral part of the world energy supply for the following years. Meanwhile, gas producers perceive natural gas as a vector of the energy transition, notably hydrogen, and thus in order to achieve long-term emission reduction targets, they have begun to consider hydrogen as a crucial f
