Ghana’s First Skate Park Is About Much More Than Skateboarding

You might not know it, but one of the most dynamic and radically adventurous skate scenes happening right now is in Ghana s capital, Accra. Nevertheless, the vitality of the country’s skate scene seems less a by-product of prosperity and more a willful, self-propelling act of determination.
Sandy Alibo founded the sports NGO and collective Surf Ghana with the dream to nurture and equip the striving local skate scene. Now a decisive part of that dream is being realized: a fully fledged skate park. “We need a space. We need to be visible,” Alibo tells me. “People ask me, ‘Why now?’ I think we are finally ready.” For both the founder and local skaters, a lack of infrastructure and support in the past has been frustrating but still not enough to snuff out the underground fire growing on the streets. Last month, Off-White™, Daily Paper and Surf Ghana announced a collaborative initiative to build the first fully functioning skate park in Ghana. To support the construction of the site, the three names have come together once again for a charitable capsule dedicated to the Freedom Skate Park.
Initially launched at Daily Paper’s annual pop-up in Ghana, the collection is now set to be available worldwide. The lineup is comprised of three T-shirts, a long-sleeved top and a bucket hat. Made of 100 percent cotton, the Daily Paper x Surf Ghana pieces are emblazoned with “Freedom and Skate” text, which celebrates the social collective’s commitment to making skateboarding more accessible in the country. Meanwhile, the Daily Paper x Off-White™ items feature Virgil Abloh‘s signature Arrow Print with a design inspired by cacao beans, one of Ghana’s main export goods.
All proceeds will go towards the construction of the site.

It has taken years of hard work, but Ghana is finally getting the home that its flourishing skateboard scene deserves: a fully functional skate park right in the middle of Accra. Over the last decade, skateboarding has become a cultural phenomenon in the country, largely spread through kids on Instagram, as has been documented right here on this site. But, because of the sport’s relative novelty on the continent (there are an estimated 4,000 full-on skate parks around the world but only 10 in Africa), the bustling capital has been without a dedicated spot for the community to coalesce.
