Disney Plus Hits 103.6 Million Subscribers as Rapid Growth Slows, ESPN Plus Perks Up Variety 5/13/2021
The jets kept firing for Disney Plus, which reached 103.6 million subscribers worldwide as of April 3, the company reported although the growth was not as torrid as Wall Street hoped.
The Mouse House’s flagship streaming service packed on 8.7 million global customers in the most recent quarter (up from 94.9 million at the start of 2021). Analysts on average pegged Disney Plus coming in at 109.3 million subscribers for the quarter, per research service FactSet. At its March 9 annual shareholders meeting, the company boasted that Disney Plus had surpassed 100 million subs.

Disney shared an update on the September release of Marvel s
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings during today s earnings call, and it signifies a positive step towards the return to the traditional theatrical window.
The Destin Daniel Cretton-helmed martial arts adventure won t be following the likes of
Black Widow and Cruella by releasing simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+, but will instead receive a shortened 45-day theatrical release before hitting the streaming service. 90 days is standard, but this is still seen as a sign of returning confidence in cinema attendance.

Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic spinoff) due to her controversial social media activity this past February, it seems Disney hasn’t completed erased Gina Carano from the galaxy far, far away just yet as the former MMA star features on the Mouse House’s ‘For Your Consideration’ poster for the Emmy Awards.
As you can see on the poster below, Carano is being pushed for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the hit streaming series, although given the names that Disney are championing in the Guest Actor field, one does have to wonder whether this might be some kind of contractual thing, as opposed to a serious attempt to score some nominations?
