A rare 1971 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda Convertible muscle car received a high bid of $4.8 million at the Mecum Auctions event in Indianapolis Friday night, but it wasn’t enough to seal the deal. The car is just one of three like it that were built with a 426 Hemi V8 and four-speed manual transmission that year and was originally exported to a buyer in France.
The ‘Cuda was originally sold to a customer in France, but now it’s back in the United States with all its original components intact, including the 425-rated-horsepower 426-cubic-inch Hemi V8. The ‘Cuda also includes a 3.54-ratio rear axle, a Sure Grip LSD, and a Hurst Pistol Grip shifter.
Mecum estimates the ‘Cuda will bring between US$5,750,000 and US$6,500,000.
It’s possible we won’t see those record high prices for this ‘Cuda however, due to variables thrown off by the global pandemic and the classic car market cooling off significantly. But if it comes anywhere close to the estimate, we could be looking at the most expensive muscle car ever sold.
