In his final years, late actor Dustin Diamond spent a decent amount of time in Peoria. That included temporary residence in a local apartment complex.
Whether he or his family were aware of it, the Saved by the Bell star also forged a posthumous Peoria connection.
Diamond died Feb. 1 in Florida. He was best known for his portrayal of Samuel Screech Powers on Saved by the Bell.
The popular TV show was a hit in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Permutations of it have been produced ever since, including a current one.
Only a few weeks before his death, the 44-year-old Diamond was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. The disease has a family history.
Komen Idaho Announces Permanent Closure
Closures, cancellations, sweeping changes and buzz-kills , if you will, have all been a part of the last 11 months of life for us here in the Treasure Valley and beyond. Our favorite restaurants, most anticipated concerts, and even life milestones like weddings have, in the last year, all taken a beating by the global pandemic that is COVID-19.
Unfortunately, we re now seeing beloved organizations that do so much for the community take a hit now, too.
Just announced this week, the Komen Idaho Montana group will no longer be in existence. The group is best known in the Treasure Valley for the annual Race for the Cure (which 103.5 KISS FM has been a proud partner of for years), breast cancer screening grants, and several other fundraisers linked to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Junko Kazukawa is widely known both for her ultrarunning athleticism and for encouraging others’ fitness goals. In 2016, I was new to trail running and really, running as a sport when we first crossed paths. I was eager to spend more time on trails in the mountains, so I signed up for a race that inspired me, the
Leadville Trail Marathon. An email from the race organizer included an announcement for Junko Mountain Training, a training plan and group provided by coach and personal trainer Kazukawa to help prepare for the event. I showed up to the first gathering, excited and nervous, outside of Denver, Colorado, where we both lived then. Without hesitation, Kazukawa invited me along to her other training days and community run meet-ups. She saw my curiosity and encouraged me, showing me that I was capable of running far by sharing tough miles together and laughing along the way.

Montana Breast Cancer Foundation Shutting Down After 25 Years
Have you ever been to Missoula s Race For The Cure, the annual event held in Caras Park meant to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research? I have, and it was a great experience - seeing everyone gathered together in search of a common goal. Unfortunately, it looks like the Race For The Cure is no more, as the Montana-Idaho chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation is shutting down for good after 25 years.
And, like many things from the past year, you can blame the closure on COVID-19. Apparently, the national Susan G. Komen Foundation is consolidating all of its local affiliates to create One Komen, so the organization still exists - it just means that funds that are raised locally aren t going to stay local, and will instead go into a larger, national pot.
