PETALING JAYA: Setting up a river basin authority would be a good way forward to sustainably manage important river basins in the country, experts say.
Water quality expert Dr Zaki Zainudin said disputes relating to transboundary river basins continued to be a matter of discussion in many parts of the world.
“It is not something new and the matter has been a topic of extensive research and discussion in Europe. I am not at all surprised that these matters are now arising in Malaysia.
“It is not just about water scarcity per se. With progress and development, the value of water has become tremendously apparent, ” he said.

PUTRAJAYA: The wrangle between Kedah and Penang over Sungai Muda could be resolved by setting up a Muda River Basin Authority (MRBA), the Environment and Water Ministry has proposed.
Describing the confrontation between the Penang and Kedah governments over the river as “untenable”, the ministry’s secretary-general, Datuk Seri Zaini Ujang, said such an authority was provided for under the Federal Constitution.
