KOTA BHARU: Malaysia Border Control Agency (Aksem) personnel nabbed 31 illegal immigrants from Thailand and Myanmar in two instances in Tanah Merah yesterday as they were being transported in tour buses. They also detained the two Malaysian drivers of the buses in the ‘Op Benteng’ operation against illegal immigrants, Kelantan Aksem commander Rusli Karim said in a statement today. It could not be immediately ascertained if the illegal immigrants were travelling in tour buses to escape detection now that the government has allowed tourist travel between certain states in tour buses.

GOF to install more barbed wire barricades along Malaysia-Thailand border

KOTA BHARU: Concertina wires will be installed at eight more locations along Sungai Golok on the Malaysia-Thailand border this year as they are effective in the effort to combat cross-border crimes. General Operations Force (GOF) South-East Brigade commander SAC Hasan Basri Ahmad Safar said the GOF had installed barbed wires along 343-metre stretch at 12 locations last year. ‘’We plan to install concertina wires at several more spots now identified as smuggling routes this year. The barricades are very effective in reducing cross-border activities in the area,’’ he said in a statement today. To date, he said 128 illegal jetties had been identified along a 40-kilometre stretch of the river from Pasir Mas to Tumpat including Tok Deh, Syed Agil, Motong, Jeram Perdah, Pok Mat, Tanjong and Kebun.

However, in Sarawak, continuous heavy rain forced more residents to be evacuated with the number of evacuees having increased to 1,473 people at 21 relief centres (PPS ) today, from only 385 people yesterday, with Kuching district recording the most number of victims at 1,179 at 12 PPS.

A check at infobanjir.water.gov.my this afternoon found Sungai Padas in Beaufort, Malihah in Kuching; Sungai Jelai in Lipis and Sungai Pahang in Lubuk Paku, Maran and in Serambi, Pekan, Pahang; as well as Sungai Golok in Kuala Jambu, Kelantan still recording readings above the danger level. Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecast rain and thunderstorms to continue to hit Sarawak and Sabah until Jan 19.
