Official: Why NAFDAC approved Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine February 18, 2021 The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday approved Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for use in Nigeria. The Director-General of the agency, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, gave the go ahead for the use of the vaccine at a news conference in Abuja. She said that the NAFDAC Vaccine Committee commenced expedited review immediately the agency received the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine dossier from Serum Institute of India on Feb. 10. She explained that members of the committee worked assiduously to review the vaccine as planned, noting that the recommendation for the emergency use authorisation was based on rigorous scientific consideration.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Monday (December 28) launched the country’s first pneumococcal conjugate vaccine ‘Pneumosil’. The vaccine is being developed by Pune-based pharmaceutical company Serum Institute of India in collaboration with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Health Ministry said in a statement that Serum Institute of India Private Limited (SIIPL) is currently the world’s largest manufacturer of vaccines by number of doses and the vaccine developed by SII are used in 170 countries.

Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan On Monday inaugurated India s first pneumococcal conjugate vaccine Pneumosil , which has been developed by the Serum Institute of India Private Limited (SIIPL) in collaboration with partners like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. As per an official release, recognizing SIIPL as the world s largest manufacturer of vaccines by number of doses and its contribution to India s economy, Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that Serum Institute s vaccines are used in 170 countries and every third child in the world is immunized with the manufacturer s vaccine He reminded the audience that SIIPL developed and got the license of the first indigenous Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) from the Government of India during COVID-19 pandemic lock-down in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat , and also mentioned the extraordinary efforts of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in this endeavour to make India self-reliant in PC
