The Big West Conference today announced that 22 individuals were named 2020 Big West Scholar Athletes of the Year. The conference honored two student-athletes from each institution – including UC Santa Barbara softball player Samantha Fabian and men s basketball player Amadou Sow – acknowledging their accomplishments on the field, in the classroom and in their communities. On Wednesday, these exemplary scholar athletes will be featured in the Big West Academic honors, a half hour show on ESPN3, which will highlight the exploits of both current and former student-athletes who push the boundaries of being a Scholar Athlete.

Newport Winter Festival organizer David Rosenberg battles blood cancer

Newport Daily News PORTSMOUTH David Rosenberg has put on literally thousands of events for people over the past decades, like the Newport Winter Festival, but Saturday was a time when his friends wanted to put on a little event for him. They hired a master ice carver to create a champagne-related sculpture on his front yard as a toast to him from the Aquidneck Island community. Rosenberg recently was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer, and has been undergoing radiation treatments at Dana Farber Institute in Boston and chemotherapy and other infusions at Newport Hospital. Rosenberg is taking this on full tilt, like he does with so much else in his life.

Glasgow Rocks basketball player disgusted by racial harassment

Julius van Sauers, from the Netherlands, moved to Scotland after signing with the club last September. He and French players Marc Kwedi and David Mpondo had to move flats after their car was attacked and racist language used in complaints about them. The incidents were reported to police but no arrests have been made. Van Sauers told BBC Scotland he was disgusted and very upset when the incidents occurred in October last year.
