This year, to save you from an overwhelming wall of names, we’ve refined our list. With just 16 albums this year, we hope you will find at least one album to fall in love with that you missed, plus a few more to nod in agreement on seeing their inclusion.
All of these records could have been number one. The positioning is a little bit arbitrary, as if there’s some sort of definitive order and none of this is utterly subjective. Part of this Does it really make any difference if it’s number 32 or 53 if it isn’t number one? -ness was behind our decision to change things up a bit this year. However, we have also shared all of our teams’ top 3s in one handy article, which should hopefully satiate those of you looking for further recommendations and assurances that we didn’t totally forget [insert name of your album of the year]. The end of 2014 is nigh, and we’ve heard some cracking songs in its oh so brief existence. From Future Islands to ‘Fancy’, everyone’s got their favourite and they’re all completely different from each other. To find some order in the chaos, we asked over 30 Drowned In Sound staffers to vote for their top five singles of the year, then added up the results and made a list of the 40 most popular choices.

To celebrate our 15th Birthday, members of the DiS team highlight a record from DiS lifetime that they feel was overlooked.
These are personal picks, and we kept the definition of lost very loose. Some chose under-appreciated albums from reasonably well-known acts. Others went for exceptional records in niche genres. And a few went for records that were adored by DiS, talked about kindly for a few weeks and then didn t seem to get much coverage from the rest of the media.

April Fool s day is one of the scariest days of the year. Not because of the terrible jokes , but because almost every year it marks the moment when you find yourself coasting along, still feeling that the year is just getting started. Then along comes April, and your inner monologue yells WTF!!!!! Where did the past three months go?! or swearier words to that affect.
However, Jan, Feb and March are always a bonanza for alternative music lovers. This is partly because the last few months of the year get clogged up with big releases and year-end victory laps, making it harder for cult concerns and newer acts to get shelf space or rustle up significant media attention. Then there s the small matter of getting enough buzz around the time festivals are booking, so plenty of acts wait for the year to return or drop their debut.
