China Boasts of Economic Might While Exploiting Developing Status

AP Photo/Ng Han Guan 1 Jul 2021 China celebrated its vast and growing economic power during the 100th birthday celebration for the Chinese Communist Party on Thursday, with dictator Xi Jinping humblebragging that his party has achieved its first centenary goal of “building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.” China, however, still presents itself as a “developing nation” to international economic forums like the World Trade Organization (WTO) and enjoys concrete benefits by claiming that status. Xi boasted on Thursday that becoming a “moderately prosperous society” has “brought about a historic resolution to the problem of absolute poverty in China, and we are now marching in confident strides toward the second centenary goal of building China into a great modern socialist country in all respects.”

US Calls Buildup of China s Nuclear Arsenal Concerning

US Calls Buildup of China s Nuclear Arsenal Concerning Voice of America 02 Jul 2021, 10:35 GMT+10 WASHINGTON - The United States said Thursday that China s rapid buildup of its nuclear forces was concerning and called on Beijing to engage with it on practical measures to reduce the risks of destabilizing arms races. The buildup has become more apparent, and it appears China was deviating from decades of nuclear strategy based around minimal deterrence, State Department spokesperson Ned Price told a regular news briefing. Price was responding to a question about a report in The Washington Post that said China had begun constructing more than 100 new missile silos in a desert area in the western part of the country.

China Reluctant to Engage in High-Level Talks with Korea

July 02, 2021 13:35 China is dragging its heels over diplomatic and security talks with Korea that were scheduled for the first half of this year. Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in southern China in April, but nothing has so far come of the plans. The last time the two countries held 2+2 talks was in 2015. It seems China is sulking because Korea agreed to offer limited support to the U.S.-led Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, an informal anti-China alliance. Beijing has also told Seoul that Chinese President Xi Jinping would visit as soon as the coronavirus pandemic eases, but the two sides have been unable to set a date. The last time Xi visited Korea was in July 2014, during the Park Geun-hye administration.

The build-up had become more difficult for China to hide and it appeared it was deviating from decades of nuclear strategy based on minimal deterrence, State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Thursday (Friday AEST). President Xi Jinping warned that foreign forces attempting to bully China would “get their heads bashed” and pledged to build up China’s military.
