HONG KONG - A man of Nepali descent said he was denied a job after an employer saw his complexion. A woman said people recoiled from her in an elevator, apparently disgusted. A child was turned away from a school that cited a preference for locals.
Racism, especially against South Asians, is not a new phenomenon in Hong Kong, whose population is 92% ethnic Chinese. But a wave of incidents during the pandemic - including comments from an official who suggested minorities were spreading the coronavirus - is bringing prejudice into sharp relief in this city of astronomical housing prices and extreme inequality.

Census 2011 finalised and published, sans caste data: Govt
The data of Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) conducted in 2011 excluding the caste data has been finalised and published, Ministry of Home Affairs said in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Member of Parliament (MP) Anbumani Ramadoss from Tamil Nadu asked, Will the government release the socio-economic and caste census taken in the year 2011, if so then what are the details.
Responding to his query, the Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said that SECC was conducted by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) and the then Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (HUPA) in rural and urban areas respectively.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a reply from the government on a plea seeking transfer of cases from several High Courts to it, challenging the Centre s notification to declare five communities Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis as minorities.
The High Courts at Delhi, Meghalaya and Guwahati are already seized of the petitions challenging the constitutional validity of section 2(c) of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992. In October 1993, the notification was issued under this Act, which declared the five communities as minorities across the country.
