PATIALA – The virus is fast spreading its tentacles across the countryside with rising number of Covid-19 deaths being reported in the rural areas.
In the past 10 days, 50 persons have died of Covid-19 in villages across Patiala district. The count may be higher as many deaths go unreported due to lack of testing, say health officials.

Chaos was witnessed at Covid vaccination centres across Punjab today as a large number of people were turned away because of non-availability of the vaccine.
Vaccination centres in Bathinda were closed down as the stock had exhausted. Similar situation prevailed in Patiala, Sangrur, Barnala Faridkot, Jalandhar, Amritsar and other places.
Bathinda district health officials directed NGOs and others to cancel all vaccination camps till further orders. The Civil Surgeon ordered that the first dose of vaccine should not be administered to anyone till the new stock arrived. The available stock was to be utilised for the second dose of vaccination only.

Eight teachers and three students from six government schools tested positive for Covid-19 in a random sampling today. Consequently, the Health Department has shut down the two government schools located in the Tripuri area and Naugawan, for the next 48 hours. Patiala on Wednesday reported 63 positive cases. With this, around 50 staff members and nine students have already tested positive in the district in February alone.
Following the Covid surge in the government schools, the Health Department has asked the District Education Officer (DEO) to further direct school heads to strictly comply with the Covid norms.
The department, in its letter to DEO, wrote that as Covid clustering had already been recorded in many government schools, therefore the risk of further spread loomed. Meanwhile, sources informed that the number of positive cases in government schools might be much higher.
