ILWomen DIII Roundup: Women s NCAA Tournament Roundup

Tuesday May 11th, 2021 11:00am (Photo Courtesy: Kevin Colton)  The NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse tournament got underway with first and second round matchups on Saturday and Sunday. A total of 37 teams qualified for postseason play, with only 16 squads remaining.  There were a pair of major upsets in the second round of the tournament. No. 13 William Smith knocked off top-ranked and host Franklin & Marshall 13-5. The Herons cruised past Meredith 19-3 in their first-round game and scored 12-straight goals against the Diplomats to advance to the third round. No. 9 St. John Fisher snapped No. 6 Catholic’s nine-game win streak with a 15-9 victory in the second round of the tournament, tallying four consecutive goals to close out the game. William Smith and St. John Fisher will play in what should be a thrilling third-round matchup on Saturday. The teams played in the season opener, with the Cardinals edging the Herons 7-6.

The second round features 16 games both on Saturday and Sunday, May 8-9, with the winners advancing to one of four regional sites the following weekend. The semifinals and finals take place May 22-23 at Kerr Stadium in Salem, Virginia where the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the City of Salem will serve as hosts for the championship event.  FIRST ROUND PREVIEW Sixth-ranked Catholic (9-0) returns to the tournament for the 12th time and takes on Becker (8-4). The Cardinals are unbeaten in first round games (7-0) and have advanced to the regional semifinals five-straight times, while the Hawks are making their first appearance in NCAA postseason play.
