Southwest Pacific storm sends widespread swell for a range of surf, terrifying to playful
Polynesian Islands get the best and biggest of the swell the first few days of July
Americas only see a glancing blow; U.S. West Coast gets playful surf early next week
Way below the equator, deep down in the Southern Ocean, a powerful storm that’s already delivered XL swell to Tasmania is reaching peak-strength to the east of New Zealand. From there, like a buckshot blast from the Southwest Pacific, this storm will scatter large and long-lasting swell around the basin the first few days of the month giving Hawaii its largest surf of the season so far on the 5th before granting the U.S. West Coast some fun waves the following week.

Last Sunday, while a lot of people in the Narrabeen area were semi psyching about the final days of their very own backyard CT, another bunch of people were freaking out.
Dylan and Summa Longbottom, Ryan Hipwood, Joel Parkinson, Wayne Cleveland, Kipp Caddy and friends had something quite different in mind a late call mission to Tasmania’s renowned super-slab.
Thing was, the forecast was iffy. Know Before You Go, we say. But what if you kinda don’t know?
Wayne Cleveland, under and out.

A lot of eyes are on this joint right now thanks to the just-announced return of the Red Bull Cape Fear event.
Coincidentally, a couple of days before that announcement, film-maker Tim Bonython decided to seize the moment and chase what looked like a serious deep-water groundswell down to Shippies from his Sydney home.
Says Bonython: “After been locked out of Tasmania for 15 months I finally got to chase a Shippies swell. With a long period south-west swell, the late summer season forecast looked all too good not to chase. So with Bondi Rescue lifeguard and big wave surfer Clint Kimmins, we rolled the dice and this is what we got.”

Following a year off after the pandemic turned normal life upside down, the insane bravery and total carnage that is Red Bull Cape Fear will return in 2021, albeit with a few changes. This year, the normal list of invite-only big wave chargers from around the world heading to Shipstern Bluff will be culled by a single criteria – Australian citizenship, disqualifying 2019 Cape Fear champ Nate Florence before he even reached the elimination round. The list of all-Australian big wave surfers will include an off-tour Mick Fanning, as well as the first women to compete at Shipstern Bluff, a team of chargers that includes former CT-er Laura Enever and up-and-coming ripper Lizzie Stokely.
