Maier’s piece is called ‘Dogwood and Cranberry Basket’. “This very old, European style of ‘Frame’ basketry is sometimes referred to as ‘farmer-made’ because its simple construction and readily available materials allowed ordinary folks to make strong and useful containers,” noted Maier’s artist statement on the piece. “This basket is woven with Red Osier Dogwood. “The frame and ribs are willow. “The handle is Highbush Cranberry. “These native shrubs are common throughout much of our province.” The statement went further detailing the creation process. “The materials needed to make this kind of basket are gathered in the fall after the plants have become dormant. CANTON The St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District is accepting orders for its 2021 annual tree seedling and shrub program through Friday, Feb. 26.
Quantities are limited.
Small 1- to 3- year-old bare root seedlings of many types will be available. Prices start at $1.80 and go up to $3.50 each depending on the species ordered. Minimum order is a group of 10 of one species unless otherwise specified. Quantities of 50 or 100 are offered for some species and some prices may decrease with quantity.
Offered are white pine, two spruces, and several varieties of hardwoods such as sugar maple, black cherry, red oak, black tupelo, sycamore, and river birch. Also available are several trees and shrubs suitable for wildlife such as red raspberry, black elderberry, black chokeberry, Red Osier dogwood, American hazelnut, and blueberries.
