High school graduation ceremonies begin next week

Four campuses elected to host graduation ceremonies at the DeKalb County Schools Coliseum in Rainsville. DeKalb County Superintendent Jason Barnett said during the April 22 board meeting, while they welcome any schools to the DCSC, other institutes elected to hold their commencement ceremonies on their home football fields or school gymnasium, with the local gymnasiums as a backup in the event of rain. “Our senior class has faced a lot of challenges and we want them to have a good graduation,” said Barnett. With that in mind, below is the list of DeKalb County Schools graduation dates, times and locations: • Ider High School: Thursday, May 20 at 6 p.m. at the DCSC

NACC Foundation announces Hilda Thornbury Fears and Carol McKown Fears Memorial Teacher Scholarship

The Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) Foundation is proud to announce a new memorial scholarship. The Hilda Thornbury Fears and Carol McKown Fears Memorial Teacher Scholarship will be available to current Northeast students who are also graduates of Sylvania High School. Established by Captain John A. Fears, USN (Ret.) and Diane R. Fears, HMCM, USNR (Ret.), this scholarship donation will enable him to honor his mother and late wife while also fulfilling his desire to give back to his alma mater (Sylvania High School) approaching the 60th anniversary of his high school graduation. Fears and his late wife, Carol McKown Fears, had also discussed giving back to Northeast for many years.

Superintendent addresses student P-EBT funds distribution

DeKalb County Superintendent Jason Barnett last Thursday provided insight on the second round of Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) benefits set to be distributed this year. The Alabama Department of Human Resources received federal approval to distribute a second round of P-EBT benefits to eligible families following the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Services approval of the plan on April 13, 2021. The P-EBT program allows children to receive benefits equal to the National School Lunch Program reimbursement rate for eligible children. According to the Alabama Department of Human Resources, benefits for children attending schools will be calculated for August 2020f through May 2021.

County educators receive first dose of COVID-19 vaccine

DeKalb County teachers and educational staff received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine Friday.  On Jan. 29, 2021, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and State Health Officer Scott Harris announced the expansion of eligibility for Covid-19 vaccinations for critical workers, including those who work in the education sector.  During last Thursday night’s board of education meeting, DeKalb County Superintendent Jason Barnett announced the vaccination clinic for employees on Friday, Feb. 19, 2021.  He said county employees had done an amazing job maneuvering the school year while in the middle of a pandemic.  “Our folks came to work and made a positive impact on our students lives and our community, and I am so thankful for that,” said Barnett. “Now that the vaccine is available, it was important for me to try and get it to them as quickly and timely as possible.”
