SYLVAN BEACH, N.Y. – Sylvan Beach Amusement Park is planning to reopen Saturday after closing for the day Friday due to weather.
Scattered showers were widespread across the region throughout the morning and early afternoon Friday, with skies clearing in Oneida County around 4 p.m.
The park’s summer schedule is Thursdays through Sundays, and Monday holidays, from noon to 9 p.m.
Fireworks
While not taking place on the holiday itself, Utica s Independence Day Fireworks Celebration will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday, July 5, at F.T. Proctor Park at the corner of Rutger Street and Culver Avenue in East Utica. A shuttle from Mohawk Valley Community College’s Payne Hall will run from 6:30 p.m. until after the fireworks. A vaccination clinic for anyone age 12 and older will run from 5 to 8 p.m. at the site.
Music
Local band Soul Injection will play at 7:30 p.m. at the celebration, but the band also will hold a roster of performances over the holiday weekend:

Businesses at Sylvan Beach are getting ready for the summer season, and Mayor Richard Sullivan is expecting this year to be busy. We’re already seeing a pent up demand from the public. They want to get out. They’ve got the cabin fever, and they want to get out.
One of the difficulties many businesses are having is finding additional employees. Because there’s such a lack of help, the Sylvan Beach Amusement Park has had to push their opening day back almost a month. Pat Goodenow is the Sylvan Beach Amusement Park Manager.
Talk about being the center of attention. This Sylvan Beach osprey family has all eyes on them as the clock ticks toward the amusement park s opening.
Between all the COVID-19 protocol and restrictions and the awkward placement of the osprey family on the rollercoaster tracks, the Sylvan Beach Amusement Park is opening later than usual this year. Still, they re not complaining because they ARE opening.

We spoke with the amusement park manager Darlene, and she told us they are working with the Department of Environmental Conservation to relocate the nest nearby. Unfortunately, they have no way of knowing if any of the eggs have hatched as the male osprey is very aggressive. Darlene, if they could go up one of the ramps, they get a good look, but the male instantly attacks.
